Why does a pineapple that looks perfect in the field sometimes fail to meet export standards by the time it reaches the packing house or the customer?

The answer rarely lies in one single cause. It's the combined effect of weather, soil nutrition, harvest timing, handling, storage, and how well farmers, collectors, processors, and exporters coordinate with one another along the way.

This seminar takes the audience inside a real, ground-up study of Malaysia's pineapple industry from farmers to exporters to government agencies to understand quality problems not as isolated technical glitches, but as the outcome of an entire chain of interconnected decisions and conditions. Rather than chasing quick fixes after the damage is done, the approach traces problems back to their roots:

  • How does erratic weather affect fertilizer decisions?

  • Why do good field practices sometimes fail to reach the farmers who need them?

  • Where does the system reward short-term yield over long-term quality?

The result is a practical, big-picture way of thinking that helps identify where a small, well-placed intervention — better monitoring, closer coordination, smarter policy can produce outsized improvements in fruit quality and export competitiveness, rather than treating every problem as its own isolated fire to put out.

While pineapple is the focus, the thinking approach applies just as well to other crops, supply chains, and quality challenges. This makes the seminar valuable not only to those working directly in horticulture, but to anyone in academia, industry, or government grappling with complex, multi-cause problems that resist simple solutions
